The story of Brian Boru has been passed on through generations, at first by bards and later by historians. As with any recounted history, it may have attained a certain amount of myth and romanticism. Brian Boru was not a myth, but a real person, with influence and power. Most of all though, he remains in our consciousness as a mediaeval hero. He is described as riding into battle on a “richly-caparisoned charger” with his sword in one hand and a crucifix in the other and “his white hair floating in the wind”
